Prostate Health and Metabolism: A Relationship That Should Not Be Overlooked

Men’s Health Week offers an opportunity to highlight the importance of prostate health as a key component of men’s overall health and well-being.

Recent evidence has revealed an increasingly close relationship Between Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS), and metabolic syndrome. Obesity, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, and chronic low-grade inflammation appear to represent common biological mechanisms linking metabolic dysfunction and prostate health. The prostate should therefore not be viewed as an isolated organ, but rather as part of a broader systemic balance.

The Impact of LUTS on Quality of Life

The social and personal impact of LUTS is far from negligible. These symptoms include frequent nighttime urination, urinary urgency, weak or intermittent urinary flow, and the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying. Together, they can significantly affect sleep quality, productivity, overall well-being, and interpersonal relationships. Nocturia, in particular, remains one of the most underestimated symptoms, despite being among those with the greatest impact on daily life.

Looking Beyond Traditional Pathways

Current therapeutic options remain essential in the management of BPH, but they are not without limitations. α1-blockers act rapidly on smooth muscle tone, yet may be associated with fatigue, dizziness, and orthostatic hypotension. Meanwhile, 5α-reductase inhibitors target the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), but generally require longer treatment periods and may be associated with reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, and ejaculatory disorders.

As a result, growing attention is being directed toward biological pathways that have traditionally received less focus but are increasingly recognized as important contributors to the progression of BPH and LUTS. These include chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, tissue remodelling, and stromal and epithelial cell proliferation.

The Role of Green Tea Polyphenols

For years, Adamas Biotech has been investigating the potential of green tea polyphenols to support biological pathways involved in inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular proliferation—processes now recognized as key factors in the progression of BPH and LUTS.

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study, Professor Bettuzzi, Principal Investigator at Adamas, and his research team observed that oral administration of green tea catechins was also associated with an improvement in LUTS among men with BPH.

This body of research led to the development of Theakine Prost, a dietary supplement based on a patented green tea extract with a high catechin content. Developed by Adamas, Theakine Prost is designed to support prostate health through a pleiotropic approach, building on evidence generated both in vitro and in human studies.
